Bennett is Superman

WOW!  Time is flying and Bennett is fighting hard to get well.  He is my Superman!  It’s hard to believe that his accident was only 3 days ago.  Since my first update a lot has happened and it’s all good.  Sara, Rachel & Jed dog safely arrived yesterday (Wed) morning after a grueling drive.  Jed has now gone to visit his old stomping grounds of Breckenridge with Wes while the girls stay here.  It’s so great to have them here.

Tuesday night things started getting crazy busy in the trauma unit at St Anthony with new cases.  Bennett’s surgery which was originally supposed to begin around 4:30 kept getting pushed back because of new trauma cases that came in.  I couldn’t help but think about how amazing these doctors are and how thankful I was that they had gotten Bennett to a place where it was OK for him to be on the back burner while they saved more lives.  I think these Trauma surgeons are a different species.  They are definitely wired differently than most of us.  Finely around 1 am Bennett was taken to surgery and they removed the packing around his pelvis.   There was no new bleeding so this was a big success and they called it a night.

Yesterday Bennett wasn’t very responsive unless woken up by one of his doctors but he seemed to be relatively comfortable and relaxed.   When he was woken up he followed commands, which is good.   He was taken to surgery at about 4:30 and came out about 11:00.  They did an arterial graft by taking a vein out of his left leg and grafting it to the damaged artery in his right leg.  We are thrilled that he has good circulation in his right leg now and the graft was a success.  They also removed the packing around his liver and kidneys and were able to close him up.  Yay!

Today was interesting.  Bennett was more responsive when woken up and gave Thomson a big thumbs up.  It was a wonderful sight but also heartbreaking to see the agonizing effort that it took.  When he woke up today he would get pretty agitated and his blood pressure would go up so we tried to keep him calm.

As I write this Bennett is in surgery having his left femur pinned.  If all goes as planned he will get to rest for a few days before the surgery to reconstruct his pelvis.  This will be the most complicated surgery to date.  The only other thing that needs to be done that I’m aware of is permanently fixing the right femur and some skin grafts on his right leg.  We are still unsure about the extent and type of nerve damage in his right leg.

UpDATE!  He’s out of surgery and it went great.  Bennett is Superman!  He’s semi awake and listening to the Accomplices.  Soon Sara will be serenading him.

Nicole and Ani set up this amazing blog and Andrew and Thomson are conspiring artists coming up with wonderful schemes to do fundraisers and crazy fun stuff for Bennett.  They made some wonderful Bobbing Bennett head fundraising jars that Wes took back to Breck and will go in the Whales Tail and another Breckenridge establishment.

Britt and Cy are arriving tomorrow.  We are so grateful for the support and love.

Thanks so much to all for your prayers, generosity, and well wishes.

Much love and gratitude,
-Libby

  1. Thanks for the encouraging status update Libby. I think it's great that he's making progress. I'm also glad that our prayers are working. It's even better that he has this much support from his family & friends. I couldn't imagine going through something like this alone. Judging from the response from this blog, Facebook and various other contributions, your family is definitely not alone in this. Let us know what we can do.

  2. Hey Libby. Just letting you know that I've been talking to a bunch of the local bands and we are just waiting on confirmation of the date and when Andrew gets back we are gonna get the posters and all the info out and all the bands have agreed to donate all proceeds from the show to Bennett. A bunch of great bands have volunteered and we are gonna set up a live feed for Bennett to watch out there. I'll let you know more when everything is confirmed.
